Today was the big operation that is done twice a year here on Ft. Bragg. It’s called Operation Clean Sweep. It is where every unit on post has a section that they have to make beautiful. Never mind that the army contracts workers to mow the grass and weed eat. I am sure that is tradition that has a long history I’ll never know, but people that outrank me understand it.
The funny part is, is that Ft. Bragg is home of the Special Operations and Airborne. We are the “tip of the spear,” except during clean sweep. All any sergeant major or officer gives a damn about is making the post look good. If you want to see the famed 82nd Airborne Division in all their glory, take a trip on post during Operation Clean Sweep. Even SF guys are out weed eating.
If I was asked to re-enlist during this week, they would get a big FUCK YOU. This is one of those weeks that I have grown to hate in the Army. Area beautification is one of those things the army does to kill time. No matter how many times or how long you work on an area, someone higher ranking than you is going to find something that you need to do. So I just go through the motions until the person in charge of inspecting comes through and tells me what is all fucked up and then I fix it so I can be done with my area. Yeah, it is lazy, but that is the army way. I get paid regardless.
And on that note, how can we have such a high unemployment rate? The military takes almost anyone. I think that it isn’t that there are not any jobs, I think that there are not any jobs that people want. I am pretty sure McDonald’s, Wal Mart, Burger King, etc. are always hiring. Now whether people want to work there or not, that is another story. I find that most people do not want to work at a job that they think is beneath them. I was there, I know. I got out for a while and didn’t find a job I was interested in or wanted to do, so I came back in. But at least I tried. People who do nothing and collect a welfare check is bullshit.
My cousin in-law is about to be one of those. She is newly married, still living at home, jobless, and her husband is a loser who can’t keep a job. Now if you think that she is going to work after she has the kid, you are smoking crack. That bitch didn’t work before she was pregnant and she damn sure isn’t going to work after she has the baby. But it isn’t her fault. She has been babied her whole life and has always gotten her way, so why should that change now?
Am I wrong in thinking this way, or is society so backwards that everyone should get something for doing nothing?
